If you're thinking about spending time in Alicante you can take the bus from the beach road in Gran Alacant and get of at Alicante Bus Station, this costs less than €2 per adult each way. The Marina is less than five minutes walk from the bus station and from here you can take the water taxi across to the Casino and start of the Old Town, the fare is about €1 single or €1.50 return. Behind the casino there's the Volvo Ocean Race Museum, the new walk way out over the Mediterranean Sea and you'll also find the bus stop for the open top tourist bus. The walk up to Santa Barbara Castle is well worth it but not an easy walk, there is a lift and buses also take you there.
From the water taxi stop next to the Casino it's about three minutes walk to Ayuntamiento Square in the Old Town, a lovely square with water fountains and little cafes, behind Ayuntamiento Square there's Plaza Santissima Faz , a lovely area with restaurants, street cafes and benches.
If you take the water taxi to the Old Town area it's nice to walk back towards the bus station along Explanada da Espana and take in the atmosphere and stop at some of the craft stalls that are open most days of the year from late afternoon. There are a large number of shops and high street stores in the streets that run off Av. Doctor Gadea and they are open until around 9.30 to 10.00pm. You pass the bottom of this street on the way back to the bus station.
If you go in to Alicante around 4.00pm you will find it's not too hot in the summer because of shade from the buildings and you can wander around, eat in the Old Town, shop in the big stores and be back in Gran Alacant for a night cap in the bars.
